Making Sustainable Clothing for Everyday Living!
Green With Tiffany with Tiffany Paige talks to Ron Alcalay of Vital Hemp at the Green Festival in Los Angeles, California. Vital Hemp makes men’s & women’s clothing. Stronger and more durable than cotton. Sustainable. Breathable. Antibacterial. Their mission is to introduce people to the superior qualities of hemp by producing the most comfortable, healthy, and truly eco-friendly clothing on the planet. Conventional cotton accounts for the vast majority of the clothes consumed in America, yet cotton is the largest consumer of pesticides in the world. Hemp can be substituted for cotton to make textiles. Hemp fiber is 10 times stronger than cotton and can be used to make all types of clothing. Cotton grows only in warm climates and requires enormous amounts of water. Hemp requires little water and grows in all 50 states! Hemp has so many benefits. It sequesters carbon, remediates soil, doesn’t need a lot of water, naturally repels weed growth and hemp has few insect enemies. Few insect enemies and no weed problems means hemp requires NO HERBICIDES and FEW or NO PESTICIDES!
Hemp is not currently legal to grow in the US (there are pilot programs in varous states), so the fabric is imported, but it is designed, cut, sewn, and dyed here in the US.
Vital Hemp is located in Santa Monica, California and as vital members of the sustainable business community, we aspire to be a part of the groundswell that changes antiquated laws, re-legalizing the cultivation of industrial hemp in the U.S.A. so that we can all benefit from the myriad uses of this amazing plant—for clothing, food, paper, fuel, and so much more.
